The Delicate Ginger Grass Plant

You know I have this personal opinion…with which you may or may not agree…God’s most beautiful…breath-taking…rejuvenating…life-inspiring creation is a delicate…green plant…bearing leaves…flowers fruits…

The vegetation….gives a face to the earth…beauty to its existence…And being an absolute nature admirer…I fall further in love with God’s this creation when the benefits of them come to awareness…Ginger Grass is just one such creation…

Ginger grass is a perennial…herbaceous plant with slender stem and leaves with flowering tops…The plant has a fresh…sharp…green scent….The oil extracted from Ginger grass has a sharp…woodsy…herbal smell….The color ranges from light golden yellow to amber…Ginger grass is related to the lemongrass herb…and has been distilled since the 18th century in India…It is often used to scent perfumes and in Ayurvedic traditions….Combinations of other essential oils can be used to recreate similar qualities to ginger grass…

Ginger grass is a close relative of lemongrass and a distant cousin of palmarosa…These family connections give a glimpse of its aroma….Ginger grass has a gentle…spicy aroma with marvelous earth tones…Just when you think you have experienced all the layers of the aroma…a hint of rose surfaces…calming the nerves and raising the spirits….

Ginger grass shoots off the ginger rhizome when you plant it….The grass will grow to be 2 to 4 feet tall at full maturity….In a couple months after planting the ginger…though…you’ll have grass that’s a foot tall….

Ginger plants can grow to about 1 m tall….The upright shoots sprout from the rhizomeat the base of the plant…

Rhizomes…knobbly and fleshy…covered in ring-like scars….This is the important part for food and medicine…Although the rhizomes grow underground…they are swollen stems…not roots….This is why fresh ginger is often referred to as ‘stem ginger’…

Flowers…the flowering spikes sprout directly from the rhizomes and are about 30 cm long….The flowers are purple with a cream-blotched base…

Fruits…red in colour…Each has three chambers containing several small black seeds….Ginger plants that are cultivated in commercial plantations don’t usually bear fruit…

Will tell you a bit about this amazing plant…Ginger…Though I just mentioned it but I’ll prefer repeating…It is a dramatic perennial plant that displays clumps of lance-shaped leaves adorned with green and yellow stripes….Although the non-variegated variety of shell ginger reaches heights as tall as 10 feet at maturity…Variegata grows only to 3 to 4 feet….Shell ginger blooms year-around…but the pink-tipped white flowers are most plentiful during the summer months….The blooms of the Variegata cultivar have a pleasant…spicy aroma….
